Culinary Kiosk
The forms that characterise coal mining infrastructure are occupied with efficiency, embodying an aesthetic to do with function rather than fad. And yet observation of these forms, their textures, materials and patterns, means recognising beauty removed from their function.

The 25sqm limit for the culinary kiosk prompted the exploration of ways to 'claim' additional space through the use of shadow, and the use of a large overhang roof.
Hinges in the four steel lattice 'walls' of the kiosk allow them to pivot where they attach to the central frame. The kiosk is then oriented so that when these walls are opened out, the sun is behind them. The subsequent shadows differentiate and claim the space they fall on. In the daytime, they create a warm and inviting geometric display. At night, lights from the inside project shadows out from the pavilion. The uneven surface of the lattice gate discourages vandalism, whilst safely securing the kitchen space during the less welcoming night hours.
