Who Am I?

Hello. My name is Sophie. I am currently in my third year at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. Design and creativity have always been close to my heart and so I find that their place in my life stretches far beyond the extents of my undergraduate degree.

I grew up in the hills of West Yorkshire attending school in Halifax and completing my A-level studies of Maths, Art & Design and French at Greenhead College in Huddersfield. In 2022, I moved to Cardiff for the beginning of my studies in Architecture.

My first year was a deep dive into the world of plan, section and perspective, with a focus on hand-drawing and conceptual design. Outside of my studies, I became an academic representative for my year group, and went on to coordinate my cohort’s end of year exhibition space. At the end of the academic term, I was offered the chance to work for Formation Architects in their Cardiff offices for an extremely insightful three months learning about the technicalities of working in practice.

My second year was intensely busy, but equally rewarding. Before term began, I was elected as President of the Welsh School of Architecture Student Association and Chair of the Student-Staff Panel (SSP). As a result, I had the opportunity to lead the society’s committee throughout the year, organising regular activties, workshops, events and formal dinners. For the SSP, I worked hard to organise productive and successful meetings throughout each semester.

Despite these additional commitments, I was pleased to maintain the highest grades in my year group, with recognition from my head of year and various outside panels. I was delighted to be awarded the ‘Best Drawing Award’ at the WSA end of year exhibition, as well as the LC Pritchard Prize for Best History of Architecture student. I was further named the winner of the Women in Property South Wales award in June, and offered a place on the ‘Future Talent’ Programme initiative led by international practice Scott Brownrigg. The past few summer months have been spent back in practice, with a mixture of experience in the offices of Formation Architects, Scott Brownrigg, and TP Bennet.

In my spare time, I am a part of the mountaineering society at Cardiff University, taking climbing, hiking and camping trips whenever I can find the time. From the ages of 8-17 years old I was also a National competitive gymnast, and whilst I no longer compete, I continue to train as regularly as my schedule will allow.
